This year, the month-long celebration of the very best League of Legends esports will be held in cities across China. 24 of the best teams from all around the world will duke it out for a chance to take home the lion’s share of the LoL Worlds prize pool.

The prize pool

LoL Worlds is famous for its massive prize pool. It may not reach the dizzying heights of DOTA 2 and The International, but it is still a sizeable chunk of change.

This year, Riot Games has announced that the prize pool for LoL Worlds 2021 will be $2,225,000. However, this announced total is subject to change. Riot Games is well known for adding to the prize pool with a percentage of in-game sales from Championship skins.

The winners of the event will take home 37.5% of the total LoL World prize pool. The second-place finisher will win 13.5%, third and fourth place will earn 7%, and fifth to eighth place will all win 4%. From eighth place onwards, each team will take home smaller and smaller increments of the prize pool with the last-place finisher only winning 0.5%.

LoL Worlds 2021 Total Prize Pool: $2,225,000

Placing Percentage Sum Awarded in USD
1st Place 37.5% $83,4375
2nd Place 13.5% $30,0375
3rd Place 7% $15,5750

Last year’s prize pool

Last year, DAMWON Gaming finished in first place at LoL Worlds. Due to concerns with the coronavirus pandemic, the world championship was held exclusively in Shanghai, China to reduce travel throughout the tournament and control the show environment. It was also the first time the event was held in China since 2017.

The LoL Worlds 2020 prize pool was close to 2021, $2,340,000. However, since two teams from Vietnam could not travel to China due to international restrictions, they were also provided with 2.1% of the prize pool.

Other LoL World details

It is still too early in the year to start predicting the 24 teams that will be attending the month-long League of Legends event. In fact, we don’t even know the exact dates. We do know that the final will be hosted in the Universiade Sports Centre in Shenzhen on November 6th. Since the event is a month-long, it is safe to assume that it will take place across October.

The League of Legends World Championship is set to take place in five Chinese cities this year: Shanghai, Qingdao, Wuhan, Chengdu, and Shenzhen. The event will be split into six distinct sections, the Play-in Stage, the Group Stage, Round 1, the Group Stage, Round 2, Quarterfinals, Semi-finals, and the Finals.
